The subject and the tasks of lexicology The term lexicology is composed of two Greek morphemes: lexis - word, phrase, and logos - science. The literal meaning is the science of word. Thus, lexicology is the part of linguistics which deals with the vocabulary and characteristic features of words and word-groups. Lexicology has its own aims, methods of research and its basic task is study and systematic description of vocabulary (lexicon) in respect to its origin, development and current use. It gives a systematic description of the word-stock of the language; It investigates the words structure, word formation, the semantic structure of English words; It also investigates the main principles of the classification of vocabulary units into various groups and ways of forming new vocabulary units; It studies the relations between different lexical layers of the vocabulary. There are two principle approaches in linguistic science to the study of language material: synchronic and diachronic. It means that the vocabulary of the language can be studied synchronically, that is, at a given stage of its development (descriptive lexicology). The descriptive lexicology of the English language deals with the English word in its morphological (morprhemes the word consisits of) and semantical (meaning of the word) structures and investigates the interdependence between these two aspects. The vocabulary can also be studied diachronically, in the context of the processes through which it grew, developed and acquired its modern form (historical lexicology). Historical lexicology studies the origin of words and word-groups, the development of their sound form and meaning. The two approaches shouldnt be set one against the other. In fact, they are interconnected and interrelated because every linguistic structure and system exists in a state of constant development so that the synchronic state of a language system is a result of a long process of linguistic evaluation, of its historical development. Closely connected with historical lexicology is comparative lexicology which studies the correlation between the vocabularies of two or more languages, and finds out the correspondences between the vocabulary units of these languages. Distinction is naturally made between general lexicology and special lexicology. General lexicology is a part of general linguistics; it studies the vocabulary and semantic processes irrespectively of the specific features of any particular language. Special lexicology is the lexicology of a particular language (e.g. English, Ukrainian, etc.). There are different branches of lexicology: etymology, word groups and phraseology, semasiology and onomasiology, morphology, word-building, lexicography, stylistics. Etymology is the branch of linguistics which deals with the origin and history of words. Semasiology is a science which studies the meaning of the words. Semasiology is closely connected to onomasiology, which goal is to find the linguistic forms, or the words, that can stand for a given concept/idea/object. While onomasiology starts from concepts, semasiology starts from forms and asks for their meanings. Semasiology is concerned with meaning and the change of meaning. A typical semasiological question is: Which meanings does this word have?, for instance, Which meanings does the word glass have?. A semasiological perspective is more the perspective of a listener who is looking for the meaning of a word s/he has heard. People speak of onomasiology when they are looking for grammatical forms that can stand for a given function, e.g.How can I express future time?, and when they are looking for conversational patterns that can be used in a given communicative task, e.g. How can I greet somebody? Morphology is the branch of lexicology which deals with the structure of the word. The ways the word is formed are studied by the word-building. The spheres of the use of the word are studied by the stylistics. Phraseology is the branch of lexicology specialising in word-groups which are characterised by stability of structure. It said he was only eighteen...they found him face down on the bedroom floor, is the first verse from Blaine Larsens song How Do You Get That Lonely. In this verse it seems that the boys death is of no great significance. However, in the chorus the listener becomes aware that this boy has taken his own life: ...how do you hurt that bad to make the call, that havin no life at all is better than the life you had. The theme of this song is all the grief and unanswered questions that suicide presents to those left behind. In How Do You Get That Lonely, the questions Larsen asks are Did his girlfriend break up with him, did he buy or steal that gun; Did he lose a fight with drugs or alcohol; Did his Mom and Daddy forget to say I love you son; Did no one see the writing on the wall? Of course these are impossible to answer because nobody knows. Although Larsen realizes people do the best they can and is not blamin anybody, he still doesnt understand how this boy became so lonely and nobody has a real explanation; they can only speculate. In conclusion, Larsen, like the others in the life, cannot make sense of this tragedy. Everybody is unable to grasp why or how anybody could take his or her life especially since this boy showed no signs of discontentment. Thus, his death is unnecessary because it only hurts those dearest to him. The Crucible a directors view Essay I am going to make a very good director as I have a very good understanding of the background of the play. I have studied the Crucible very well and have collected information about Arthur Miller who wrote the play. Although the story was written in the 1950s we can still identify the similarities between the 1950s America and 2004 America. Arthur Miller felt what was happening in America at the time was similar to it. However the play Crucible is about the paranoia in a village called Salem. In America during the time the McCarthy Era was happening McCarthy black-listed people meaning prevented people from getting jobs if they refused to show up trials or if he decided that they were a communist. This is quite similar to what happens in Salem as there were also witch trials in Salem because if people were odd or an outcast in the village then they would be singled out and put on trial for being a witch. On the other hand I also think that this has some similarities to what Hitler did to the Jewish people as he killed innocent Jews callously because the only reason being that they were Jewish. However in the Crucible if a person was seen as a witch then they would be killed immediately. As an illustration of my style as a director, I would like to draw your attention to the beginning of Act four. In the scene where Proctor refuses to sign and confess so he therefore gets hanged. All the characters present in this scene are Proctor, Hathorne, Danforth, Elizabeth, Parris and Hale. My directing advice to actor Proctor is to speak with more self-importance and self-infatuation just to show people that he stands up for what he believes is right without any fear. Elizabeth should have a sad face filled with nervousness and almost close to tears. Hale should act desperate to show his concern about the situation, whereas Danforth should act self-centred with an attitude to give the people the expression that he is an impenetrable horrible man. Music for certain scenes will be composed by an illustrious composer which will stimulate the emotions. However the music for this scene should be quiet and sad but with a sense of tension for people to start guessing as to what would happen next. This will therefore show how Elizabeth and Hale feel about what Proctor is going through and also how Proctor is heartbreaking and depressed about being hanged. The time of day he gets hanged will be dawn but a flash of darkness should come over Proctor when he is told to be hanged which will therefore give the scene a tense feeling. The next example of my directing is the scene where Tituba and Sarah think that they are being moved to Barbados when they are really being moved to another cell. The characters present in this scene are Herrick and Hopkins. Tituba should be able to perform in a convincing Jamaican accent all the way through. Herrick and Hopkins should act in a persuasive style with a convincing accent. Theres not going to be a lot of props used and so there would be a feeling of space on stage and therefore it wont be clustered. However there will be two cells as they are going to be moved from one cell to another. There will be a table and a chair with a lamp on top of the table. The music composed will be silence music to show the effect that things are changing. There will be a sad music when they are changing cells to show that they dont like the idea of being moved and also to have a good impact. In this scene, when people are talking spot lights will be put on them so that the audience will be able to see their facial expressions like for example the audience will be able to see how Tituba and Sarah are feeling through their facial expressions. One more example of my directing is when Elizabeth is being bought into the court while Proctor is being questioned. This scene is on the subject of Proctor trying to save his wife Elizabeth whilst Hale tries to persuade Elizabeth to get Proctor to confess. The characters present in this scene are Elizabeth, Danforth, Hale and Hathorne. The only advice to be given is to have persuasive facial expressions and also know how to answer questions when put under anxiety. The only props used are chains which will be used when Elizabeth is being bought into the court to show the audience the effect of her power being a witch. The sound effects will show how Elizabeth is really feeling about being told to persuade Proctor to confess. Spot lights will also be used on her to show her facial expressions. Therefore as you can see, I have a great understanding of the play Crucible and so would make a superior director. I assure that the play if directed by me would become one of the most popular plays as it would be a play full of life and so most people would want to watch it. Although I have many more high-quality ideas, the examples I have given so far were just brief samples of my work. However if I am given the chance to direct this play I would surely make this play an unforgettable play!

September 11, 2001, the United States, was suddenly and deliberately attacked by Islamic terrorists who used American planes to attack three sites on American soil killing thousands of Americans. Sadly, these terrorists entered the airports, boarded planes, and attacked the crews with weapons that they hid in their luggage. At this point Americans, after recovering from the shock of the ataacks of the World Trade Center Towers, The Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, wondered how these men bent on the destruction of Americans and their property, were able to bring weapons through the security systems. Only then, after conducting extensive tests of the current airport security system, they were able to find hundreds of flaws in the system. Because of the attacks, many of the new security procedures were developed. Also because of the attack, the debate of airport security and human rights has developed. What extent does airport security need go so that it effectively screens all baggage and personal effects, yet does not violate the rights of the individual? Why is this issue so important? God silences and comforts Essay

Milton wrote â€Å"When I consider how my light is spent† when he was rapidly losing his eyesight. He contemplates on his life prior to blindness (â€Å"light†) and on his life after –â€Å"dark world and wide. † As a Christian, he questions the current state of his being and laments at how it has rendered him inadequate in serving his Maker. He feels that he now cannot serve God as best as he can due to his handicap. Understandably so, he is bitter, frustrated, and in despair. Often in our lives, we are faced with difficulties of all kinds. We do not like it so we get angry, but we cannot change it so we get cynical. We lash out on God by constantly asking â€Å"Why,† and wallow in self-pity in believing ourselves to be useless. But see, in the poem, this is where God shows Milton that he’s wrong. First and foremost, God in Himself is complete (â€Å"God who doth not need/Either man’s work or His own gifts†). For God, who needs neither man nor man’s abilities to define Him, Milton simply needs to bear his situation and trust in God wholeheartedly. All God requires is for man to serve him as best as he can to the extent that his circumstances allow him to. In Milton’s case, he need not be up to par with the most able and talented people to serve God; His service in light of his condition may in itself, be sufficient. With this, God silences and comforts Milton’s distrusting heart, and Milton yields to Him in unquestioning compliance. Your last name, 2 Reality confronts me with a world where circumstances don’t always go my way. In fact, things can even go so horribly wrong as to leave me feeling completely lost. Like Milton, it takes time for me to fully accept an unfavorable situation beyond my control. I question it, I curse it, and I tell myself that I can be and do better otherwise. In short, I use a bad situation as a convenient excuse to justify my failures and shortcomings. Like many others, I am guilty of humanity’s problem of wanting to control every aspect in life. However, problems constantly remind me that I will always be subject to the unforeseeable and the inevitable. I cannot be so arrogant in that I must always be in control of every situation, but neither can I just let circumstances prevent me from doing my best. Like Milton, I realize that the true test of character is how I act in the most trying times. The best of my ability is seen in how I am able to make the most of what I have. I know that when I do my best, my talents and abilities are never wasted in the eyes of God. Of course, there are still days when I feel that all elements are against my attempts to accomplish something, but that’s all right; I can let go with faith in the fact that I have done my very best. That, perhaps, is all that is really required of me. â€Å"Who best Bear His mild yoke, they serve Him best† –Milton, in referring to his troubles as mild, gave me something more to think about: How often have I thought of my problems as unsurpassable? How often have I believed myself to be the unluckiest of the unlucky? Quite often, I’m afraid. But as I look beyond myself and at the problems of people around me, I shamefully realize how my troubles pale in comparison. There is a whole world of people around me who suffer in ways I cannot even comprehend. Compared to them, my problems are small Your last name, 3 and trivial. If they, in their state, can bear and go on with their lives to the best of their abilities, how much more can I? In fact, history tells us that Milton’s best works were written after he became blind! Truly, I have no excuse to validate a contemptuous disposition. So with an acquired sense of humility, I admit that the only real limit to my abilities is myself. Nowadays, I confess that problems still get to me. As much as I tell myself to â€Å"just grin and bear it,† I still find it hard to do so unquestioningly. But as I think of Milton’s poem, I see things clearly and more rationally. Essentially, God’s message to Milton is that it is not the situation that makes a man, rather, it is what man makes of the situation. Is the level of medical care which is used for victims of life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can be given full medical care at a hospital. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and by laypersons who have received BLS training. BLS is generally used in the pre-hospital setting, and can be provided without medical equipment. Many countries have guidelines on how to provide basic life support (BLS) which are formulated by professional medical bodies in those countries. The guidelines outline algorithms for the management of a number of conditions, such as cardiac arrest, choking and drowning. BLS generally does not include the use of drugs or invasive skills, and can be contrasted with the provision of Advanced Life Support (ALS). Most laypersons can master BLS skills after attending a short course. Firefighter, lifeguards, and police officers are often required to be BLS certified. BLS is also immensely usef ul for many other professions, such as daycare providers, teachers and security personnel and social workers especially working in the hospitals and ambulance drivers. CPR provided in the field increases the time available for higher medical responders to arrive and provide ALS care. An important advance in providing BLS is the availability of theautomated external defibrillator or AED. This improves survival outcomes in cardiac arrest cases.[1] Basic life support promotes adequate blood circulation in addition to breathing through a clear airway: Circulation: providing an adequate blood supply to tissue, especially critical organs, so as to deliver oxygen to all cells and remove metabolic waste, via the perfusion of blood throughout the body. Airway: the protection and maintenance of a clear passageway for gases (principally oxygen and carbon dioxide) to pass between the lungs and the atmosphere. Breathing: inflation and deflation of the lungs (respiration) via the airway These goals are codified in mnemonics such as ABC and CAB. The American Heart Association (AHA) endorses CAB in order to emphasize the primary importance of chest compressions in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.[2] Healthy people maintain the CABs by themselves. In an emergency situation, due to illness (medical emergency) or trauma, BLS helps the patient ensure his or her own CABs, or assists in maintaining for the patient who is unable  to do so.
